We know that you want your business to achieve its best. We’re here to help you reach it.

Having reliable communication systems that work with your business is an essential in giving your business the keys to levelling up and achieving your next set of goals.

For those with remote locations, MPLS and VPLS provide excellent solutions for creating network connections between remote and multiple locations.

But what are they and which one is right for your business?

To help you find the right solution, we’ve put together this ultimate guide to VPLS and MPLS.

What is MPLS?

In a nutshell, MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) is an efficient way of directing your network traffic to prioritise your most important data.

Created in the 1990s, MPLS was designed as an alternative to traditional IP routing. This was a long and time-consuming process of reading the data on each packet, before consulting its own routing data to find out where the data should be sent next.

MPLS avoids this complex process by assigning a label to each data package as it comes in. This means that the router can send the data to the right location, without having to read the entire package and search where to send it.

The label system is what also makes MPLS great for data prioritisation – so the most important information can be transmitted without delay.

What is VPLS?

VPLS (Virtual Private LAN Service) is a way of joining remote networks over a single connection, allowing them to safely and securely communicate with each other across the same local network.

So, no matter where your different locations are – VPLS will bring them together on the same LAN. Using the same local network for each location, VPLS provides the most secure connection to an off-site storage or data centre.

Unlike traditional systems for connecting these locations, VPLS doesn’t need any conversion of encapsulation processes, proving the fastest, most efficient and reliable way to connect different locations.

Highly versatile, VPLS can also be used for point-to-point, multipoint and any-to-any connectivity, making it the best option for many businesses.

 VPLS vs MPLS

When it comes to VPLS vs MPLS, the answer isn’t as straightforward as you might think.

Both VPLS and MPLS bring unique strengths and benefits. Like any communications system, there’s no ‘one fits all’ model – your unique needs will determine which system is right for you.

For those who want data high security, VPLS may be the better option. Yet, MPLS is better at prioritising high importance data and is also more scalable than VPLS – making it a great customisable backbone.

Although MPLS and VPLS are different technologies – they can both be used alongside each other for the best of both worlds. Using a mix of the two will give your business a strong and scalable network connection with the ability to safely handle and prioritise sensitive data.
