The London 2012 Games will be the most technologically advanced by far, with HD broadcasting going mainstream, huge amounts of visits expected to official Games websites, and with great amounts of content, data and video, produced by the spectators and fans themselves to share with their friends and social networks online. However, the underlying technologies used to support all this will be tested.
O2, Vodafone, Everything Everywhere and Three have shared the burden of erecting new masts around the Olympic sites to cope with the increased strain from the estimated half a million people each day expected to attend the month-long event. This will overlay the existing coverage provision and existing customers can expect a ‘normal’ service during Games-time. However, at times of peak demand it is unavoidable that mobile networks may be slowed down by higher volumes of traffic.
Vodafone said it expects data traffic during the Games to be like “England playing in the World Cup final on Christmas Day, every day, for 17 days.”
Please also be aware that if you are using video streaming applications on your mobile, you may see delays, and as streaming applications use a lot of data, they may cause you to exceed you monthly data download allocation. Click here for tips on controlling your mobile data usage during the Games.
